green week; day 5

But THIS, my friends, has to be the most beautiful green of all.

It's the "ready to go" signal on the caffeine machine.  Seriously. I couldn't start my day without this green.

Thank you SO MUCH Emily, for hosting Green Week!  I love being part of such an amazingly talented group.  

My sweetie girl has been home all week with a fever, and was feeling blue.  So I sent her an email. And she replied:

green week; day 4

It seems that all my greens have been of living plant matter, so I'm going to change that right. now.  I mean, it's not as if that's the only green in my life!

This post could either be titled Emily's green week installment III, OR The Beets.  Because they're in. The ground.  Planted.  It's actually supposed to hit 70 degrees here today, so it even FEELS green!

I swear, Burrow House is not going to turn into a gardening blog.

But that's where I am right now.

green week; day 2

They are tired, and want nothing more than to rest.  But I'm not ready to let them go.

My children have taken up the garden challenge with gusto.

There is some ambitious planning going on around here.  The calculator was out last night, clicking away, tallying how many plants can fit into their 7'x7' plots.  That's 84"x84", by the way.  

Raike is now researching corn varieties, and has taken it even one step further.  He is planning to put out some meal corn, so he can make his own cornbread.  I think when he's finished with his paper on how you harvest and grind your own corn, I'm going to have him be a guest commentator here so he can teach the rest of us.

green week; day 1

I absolutely adore color weeks.  This week, Emily is hosting a GREEN week.  Now, my mind is wrapped all around green right now.  It's March, and I have garden fever in a big way.  It's still a bit too chilly, but I have schemes. Great schemes.  Fantastic schemes.  More on that later.

The bananas at the market yesterday were almost as green as the pears.  My family gobbles them down anyway.  They will be banished from our house soon enough.  Starting in May, we will be STRICTLY local-grown again until October.  That means no bananas.  No avocados (boo hoo).  No pineapples.

And while we could lament the things we will be letting go, I prefer to celebrate the seasonal yumminess that we will be rolling in.  If it doesn't come from the CSA, farmer's market, or my gardens, it won't be on my table.  I've already started tweaking my garden plans using the quantity/variety lessons I learned last year.

The best part of it all, is that I'm turning over a 7'x7' bed to each of my children.  I will teach them how to map out their bed by what vegetables they want to grow.  We'll learn all about yields, production times, and harvesting and storage.  They'll be responsible for finding recipes using what they've grown. And eating it!

I want them to have a working knowledge of taking something from the ground to the table.  I want them to develop an appreciation for the people who work hard to bring us our food.  But most importantly, I want them to learn to be responsible stewards of the land and their bodies.

I went in to my favorite little family-owned bakery this morning, and I don't think that I had ever noticed that it's, you got it, YELLOW!

And not only that!  This was on the "specials" board.  

I love this place!

Erin, I'm really going to miss color week!  I'm going to miss everyone else too.

And, I'm kind of digging sharing some tunes that move me.

I found these at the grocery.  Spring in a pot, I like to call them.

They are right next to my work space in the kitchen, so their fragrance wafts around my head as I potter.  At 5:30 this morning, with the smell and the robins singing outside my window, a was completely transported.  It was quite a shock when I walked out into the 19 degree air!

I had a different picture entirely planned for today.  But then I looked down, and realized that what was lying before me was far more satisfying.  Real. Wholesome. NOW.

My breakfast. Bread right out of the oven with butter and orange blossom honey.  Isn't my honey pot the most adorable thing you have ever seen?  It was a completely unexpected present from Erin.  Melissa made it. And you can see more of her stuff here.

So, to get into the spring spirit a bit, Erin is hosting YELLOW WEEK this week.  Now, we all know that I'm a girl who needs an assignment.  Just not a deadline.  But that's another story!

I just love pastels.  These are semi-hard, so they're nice and chalky.  And super-saturated. Yummy. They just HAPPENED to be sitting out on my counter partaking in the Kids Artist Trading Card Swap festivities.
